I disagree, sometimes they really do charge too much. A friend of mine climbed a mountain and was camped next to some guy who paid almost twice as much as him, and there really wasn't that much difference between the two climbs.

From my experience it's always cheaper to book a tour/climb from a local company when you actually arrive at your destination rather than from a travel agent in your home country. Also that way you know your money is going to people who live in that country rather than into the profits of an international tour operator.

Usually with this sort of thing you get what you pay for - its better to pay more to be honest, you don't want a dodgy guide!
